Gums are made of pink tissue that covers the jawbones and the roots. This tissue is thick, tough, and full of blood vessels. When the gums swell, they become sensitive, irritating and sometimes painful and bleeding. When swollen, the gums protrude and bulge, taking a red color and will bleed easily when you brush your teeth.
In most occasions, gingivitis is the cause of swollen gums. However, in many other cases the cause might not be gum disease but nutritional deficiencies and reaction to certain foods. It is important to find out the reason for the swelling before embarking on treatment. Below are ten ways to get rid swollen gums.
1. Increase Your Vitamin C Uptake
This is effective in treating sore gums that are caused by malnutrition and illness. Illnesses that attack your body’s immune system have potential to damage the gums and cause swelling. When autoimmune disorders attack the white blood cells, the result will be tender swollen gums. Eat foods plenty of straw berries, broccoli, papaya and dark leafy greens like kale among others.

Mix a few tablespoons of clove oil and olive oil, soak a cotton ball into this mixture and use it to dab the swollen gums. Hold it there for a few minutes so the gums get sodden with the oil.
7. Baking Soda

Soak a clean cloth in warm water and wring out the excess liquid. Hold this warm cloth against your face pressing in for say five minutes. Next hold an ice bag against face until the area starts to become numb. Repeat the whole cycle two or three times.
Other useful tips:
- Mix lemon and rose flower juice.
Gargle this solution and then spit it out after a few seconds. Do this for three or four times a day.
- Mix raw lemon juice with warm water.
Use this for gargling. This reduces the swelling and also helps to rid your mouth of bad order that typical with swollen gums.
- Make a paste of castor oil and camphor.
