Bad breath in cats will make you uncomfortable when near the cat. Bad breath is a manifestation of poor hygiene in your cat mouth or a sign of health complication. If your cat never had bad breath and suddenly you discover it has developed bad breath, you should take your time and assess the cat so that you will identify the real cause of the bad breath.
Other disorders which can be accompanied with bad breath in cats include tooth cavity due to poor dental care, toothache among other dental complications. Plaque bacteria can affect your cat’s teeth leading to development of bad breath. Even if you used to love your cat, you will move away if it will start smelling bad. Some of the causes of bad breath in cats include stomatitis, poor dental hygiene, gingivitis and food allergies. There are many remedies you can apply to get rid of bad breath in cats.
1. Peppermint Oil
Peppermint is rich in menthol which will produce refreshing odor to your cat’s mouth. It is also rich in antibacterial properties which will enable it kill bacteria in the mouth of the cat. If your cat had developed tooth cavity which was causing the bad breath, peppermint can help in getting rid of the tooth cavity. Just take a cup of water and add a tablespoon of peppermint oil. Stir the solution using a spoon. After you have prepared the solution, transfer it into a spray bottle after which you will apply it on your cat’s mouth. You can repeat the process once in a week to get rid of the bad odor in the cat’s breath.
2. Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is rich in citric acid. This is very helpful in neutralizing the bad odor caused by bacteria in the mouth of cats. It has antiseptic properties which are very helpful in healing the wounds in the cat’s mouth. It can help in getting rid of bad odor as well as protecting the cat’s teeth against decay. Take a cup of water in a small bowl and add 3 drops of fresh lemon juice. Stir the solution well before allowing the cat to drink the solution. You can repeat the process twice in a week to help your cat get rid of the bad breath.
Parsley is rich in odor reducing properties which will help your cat get rid of the bad odor. It reduces the chances of dental disorders greatly as well as improving the health of your cat. Just take a cup of water and pour it into a container where you will add about 6 drops of parsley which is chopped. Allow the water and parsley to boil in gentle flame after which you will allow the solution to cool for about an hour. After the solution is cool enough, allow the cat to drink so that it will get rid of bad breathe. You can repeat the remedy once in week.
Carrot can remove smelly plaque from the teeth when chewed. It stimulates saliva production which washes away the food particles which have been hidden between the teeth hence causing the bad odor. Take about 2 carrots and chop them into small pieces. After your cat’s regular meal, give it the carrots to chew. You can repeat the process on a daily basis to get rid of the bad odor completely.
5. Brown Rice
If your cat has bad breath due to indigestion, you can easily help the cat in getting rid of the bad smell by allowing the cat to eat the rice. Just take half a cup of brown rice and wash it. You will then have to cook the rice till it is ready to serve. After the rice is fully cooked, transfer it to a bowl and let the cat eat it. You should let the rice cool so that your cat will easily eat it. You can repeat the process twice a week to get rid of the bad breath.
6. Margosa Leaves
Margosa leaves are rich in antibacterial properties which help in fighting germs which cause bad breath in cats. The leaves are very helpful in protecting your cat against cavity and other oral complications. You will be required to take fresh Margosa leaves and wash them. Grind the leaves to form a paste which you will use to brush your cats teeth. After brushing the teeth of your cat, you can rinse with fresh water. By repeating the process twice a week you will get rid of the bad breath. You can as well reduce changes of your cat developing bad breath after you make a habit of brushing the cat regularly with a brush. This will help in getting rid of trapped food particles which can lead to bad breath.
7. Change Your Cat’s Food
You can introduce food which will help your cat clean the teeth. Common foods which you can introduce include crunchy kibble. Every bite of crunchy kibble will help your cat in getting rid of plaque from the teeth. This is simply because the crunchy kibble has irregular shape. You can mix the food with soft foods till your cat get used to them before you leave it eat the hard foods. The type of food you are feeding your cat may be the main cause of its bad breath problem. If you had changed the food them the cat developed the complication, then you need to check on the type of food and change it if possible. There are some cat foods which are known to reduce bad breath. You can switch to such foods so that you will achieve quick results.
8. Feed your cat with safe green veggies
Green veggies will protect your cat against food allergies. This will prevent formation of bad breath which will make you try to avoid the cat. The green veggies have been formulated to help your cat avoid food allergies which can really disturb the comfort of your cat.
9. Feed your cat with probiotics
Your cat may have intestinal problem which is making it experience bad breath problem. You will easily help your pet in getting rid of the intestinal problem by feeding the cat with enzymes and probiotics.
