While shaving is a common word associated with the men and the boys, even the fairer sex sometimes adopt it to do away with unwanted hair. Shaving is an inexpensive and trouble-free way to get rid of unwanted hair. But, again it is associated with a serious complication which is shaving rash. It can be termed as an irritation in the skin, that erupts immediately after a particular area has gone through the ordeals of shaving.
It generally causes a smoldering feeling and the area can start showing in a red colored inflammation. It is a common phenomenon with the men who have to shave their faces frequently, but as mentioned earlier, women can have them too if they shave their legs and armpits. There are many reasons of developing shaving rashes like using a blunt blade, a hard soap or shaving dry and unconditioned skin. Often people have sensitive skin which can again give rise to rashes. Whatever may be the reason, we should know means to get rid of shaving rash.
1. A cold Compress
When we want to get instantaneous respite from the blazing feeling associated with a rash, we can soothe the area by cold compress. It reduces the inflammation, redness and itching. It also prevents the occurrence of the razor bumps. We can drape a few ice cubes in a towel and place it over the area for some time. The same thing can be done with cold water also. This process can be repeated quite a few times a day, till positive results are felt.
2. Applying Cider Vinegar
One can avoid getting rash from shaving by applying cider vinegar. It has anti-inflammatory properties which have the capacity to reduce swelling along with the itching feeling. The acetic acid is also capable of fighting against the probability of having an infection.
3. Use of Aspirin
We all have easy access to aspirin. This acts wonderfully in reduces the rashes developed from burning. We have to add t two aspirins in one teaspoon of warm water and make a paste out of it. Then we have to take this paste and rub the affected area. We have to leave the skin for 10 minutes and wash it off with warm water. We can get the desired results after this. People having a vulnerable skin type should not opt for this remedy.
4. Use of Aloe Vera
We are all aware of the soothing effects of Aloe Vera. The gel which comes out of fresh aloe vera leaves has a cooling effect on the area and heals the rashes first. The gel also keeps the skin moisturized so that the skin responds to the treatment fast.
5. Use Of Black Tea
The black tea bags are also a great source of getting rid of the skin rashes formed due to shaving. The tannic acid present in tea is mainly responsible for its healing properties. We have to wet a bag in hot water. Then we have to cool it by putting it in the fridge for 10 minutes. After that we can rub the bag over the swollen part for few minutes. Very soon, we will get relief from the adverse effects.
6. Use Of Honey
Honey has thousands of properties which can take care of several problems faced by us. It is also used to treat razor burns. Applying honey directly to the rash infested skin, or mixing it with yogurt, both can have soothing effects on the skin.
7. Baking Soda
Baking Soda is something, we always have in our home. A mixture of baking soda and one cup of water can have magical effect on the rashes.
Cucumber is known for its moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties. A few slices of cooled cucumber, when applied to the skin, immediately heal the area. Alternatively, a paste of cucumber and milk can also be rubbed over the area.
9. Tea-Tree Oil
Rich in anti bacterial properties, tea-tree oil is also another good choice for getting rid of skin rash from shaving. Five drops of tea tree oil mixed with two tablespoons of water can be applied to the affected skin. Then it can be rinsed off with warm water to get a skin free of rashes. The same thing can be done with tea tree oil and olive oil.
A mixture of oatmeal, yogurt and honey when applied to the skin and left for half an hour, produces wonderful results.
It is not only the facial area which gets affected with skin rash after shaving. We often try to shave the unwanted hair in our legs and pubic area as well. Rashes can develop there as well. Some basic prevention which we can follow is to keep the skin hydrated while shaving and using a good quality shaving cream. Even after this, if rashes appear we can take the following steps to avoid having shaving rash on legs and pubic shaving rash.
1. We should never re-shave before the burns have gone completely. We should allow some hair to come out in these areas, before we shave them again. As otherwise, there can be possibility of more serious infections.
2. We should never scratch the areas as contact with the nails in our fingers can further affect the area.
3. We should always use a product that is specially meant for treating the razor rashes. We should specially use those products which have more of salicylic acid, glycolic acid, witch hazel or aloe.
All the above mentioned treatments are equally effective for treating the shaving rash on legs and pubic shaving rash. In addition to this we can apply lemon juice to the area as its acidic properties will help to get freedom from the microbes that are responsible for causing the rashes and the itching. But, before application the lemon juice should be diluted with water so that the citric acid is further not responsible for any irritation. Alum block is also a good way to avoid all complications arising out of shaving.
